How good is Idaho’s defense?

Post by TomCat88 » Sun Sep 08, 2024 9:41 am

They’re not allowing a lot of points. Held Oregon to 24, but Oregon did have just under 500 yards. Held Wyoming to 13, but that offense looks pretty bad and had just 118 yards vs Arizona State.

The kid from Helena, Newby, is dynamite! Their defense is lights out. I watched they Wyoming game and they dominated. I know, Wyoming isn't very good, but it's still 20 more scholarships.

...and how about UNLV? They're 3-0. Scored 72 points on Utah Tech. Beat Kansas last night.

The Newby kid is kind of a mystery. Looks like he was 2nd team all conference. I don't think he got any all-state recognition. No offers from MSU or UM out of high school....not sure if he was even offered a PWO from either school. Goes to Tech and does well. Transfers to Idaho and is a monster.

Hard to say at this point but they appear to be very good. Wyoming and Albany have pretty awful offenses so far, especially running the ball and rush defense is Idaho's specialty. Albany is 107th in the FCS in rushing offense and Wyoming is 119th in the FBS. The defensive performance against Oregon appears to be good but Oregon only rushed for 109 yards and 3.0 YPC next week against Boise State so hard to say. But yes statistically Oregon dominated them but only managed 24 points out of it. 31 first downs, 487 yards of offense and 39:15 minutes TOP will usually get you more than 24 points. 8 penalties and 1 turnover helped Idaho.

Their defense won't be the reason they lose any games this year though I don't think.

I was hoping someone would go look at those stats from the Oregon game. They're a great example of how misleading total yards can be. 487 total yards, but it took 87 plays. That's below 6.0 yards per play. Always go with yards per play.

Idaho's starting defense has allowed just 888 yards on 198 plays. About 4.5 per play. MSU's starting defense is at 4.3 per play (99-427), but against significantly easier opposition.

Just wondering how much these numbers would be swayed by taking into consideration the use of 2s and 3s?

I did that. This is just (roughly) starter stats.

I still think Idaho has a good defense. They made a mistake (late hit) that gave MSU points but MSU could’ve scored more. MSU’s physicality, especially on the OL is overwhelming.

The ISU OL is supposedly pretty physical and if that’s true then that’s a good reflection on MSU’s DL.

It’ll be interesting to see how they respond to this loss. Looks like they lost another quarterback but may get Lynch back soon. The schedule is favorable for them. But that was a tough, demoralizing loss.

But if they can squeak by Eastern, good chance Jack Layne comes back after their bye week and beats Portland State, Weber State, and Idaho State.

They very likely still get into playoffs at 8-4.

You must be thinking of Jack LaLanne. Jack Layne is good, but he's nothing compared to the guy you're obviously thinking about.

But seriously, can someone explain why Jack Layne is so highly regarded? He's had two great games in 2022 and 2023 vs. ISU. Is it just based off that or is there something else.

I think a healthy Layne is an improvement over a banged up Wagner. Given the competition that should be enough.

As far as his reputation, I think that's the reality of playing in a conference with limited media coverage, very few people actually watch all these guys play, and a few statistical anomalies are likely to influence opinions.

He had a good game last night. Made some good throws but wasn’t overwhelming at home against an Eastern Washington team that is third from last in pass efficiency D and passing yards allowed.

These stats make our D look even better, at least to me. This coming weekend will be more telling. Every week makes me more confident. Next week we go 1-0.

GOOOOOO BOBCATS.

The 2-5 ranked offenses haven’t played MSU. ISU is 6th but would be third if it hadn’t played MSU.
