Next week, on the 30th, the playoff committee puts out their ranking. This will be after SDSU plays USD, so should be a good indication of how they view MSU relative to the Dakota Schools.
At the risk of being an unending pessimist, I think I know what they think...
I am getting so damn sick of this persecution complex Bobcat fans have. The committee is not out to get us. An undefeated MSU will always be ranked higher than an XDSU with a loss. If we keep curb stomping teams, we will have homefield in the playoffs. I am beyond certain of that
Heh, well... The committee may not be out to get us, but history is a great teacher here and it has not been kind to our Cats. Further, there's no reason to believe that will be changing any time soon.
I'm with you in the past, but the selection committee no longer has or is led by a Gris representative. I'm not sure who is representing the Big Sky this year but I know Haslam ran out of years to be on it and you can't convince me that didn't play a part in some of the questionable seeds the Cats got in the past few years. I think starting this year, we'll see the Cats seed be a little more in line with what most of us are thinking.
I know some of you will say that Haslam had to be unbiased and whatnot but I say that's keeping your head in the clouds. No one in the Cat/Gris rivalry can be truly unbiased. Just my opinion, have at it as you will.

Thanks for that. I just knew that Haslam had hit his "term limit" so I'm glad to hear it's Sac State as our representative now instead of dUMb.

Just curios how you say that with such emphasis. We're you in the rooms. I think there has been some odd decisions. They have blamed regionalization. I personally feel it has been to protect NDSU SDSU more than anything, wasn't it UND that had to go to Weber recently. Split schedules have made it tough, regionalization has made it tough

You think the committee 'protected' NDSU by sending them to Bozeman then Vermillion, then Missoula last year? They 'protected' SDSU by sending the Jacks to Bozeman in 2021?
They "protected" NDSU in 2022 by planning to send NDSU to undefeated Sac State? Or that somehow the committee knew that UIW was going to knock off Sac State, but blow a 5 point lead in Fargo?
None of that remotely passes the smell test. It's totally incredulous.
I certainly wasn't in the room with Haslem & the committee when they made those super nefarious choices & set up the puppet strings with UIW...but Sam Herder made mention of Harlem & his professionalism on the committee several times over the years on his podcast.

I guess my thoughts are incredibly smelly then.
They kept them on opposite sides of the bracket. With the losses NDSU had last year they had no choice to send on road but they certainly could have had them on SDSU side. 2021 SDSU wasn't even seeded and Cats only hosted due to other upsets and had to win at an undefeated spring champion that had never lost a home playoff game. Seems like it's okay for rest of their conference and the Big Sky to knock each other off.
NDSU first road playoff win was last year against MSU, Cats and Griz have 1 each. Home field is king. Posters can have opinions different than you, it's okay doesn't make it a complex of any kind. There have been enough odd pairings and seedings to have a discussion. It's a message board. That's what we do.

IMHO, many of the folks who have a vote on the FCS Stats poll are not as educated on FCS football as folks like Sam Herder. Nor do they invest much time researching the teams and conferences. As a result, one of the key indicators they probably use when ranking teams is past performance/matchups. I get it - the poll is supposed to be only about your team's current performance and history should not come into play, but human nature tells us that it does.
Because of our recent history in matchups against the DSUs, it's my belief that MSU will usually get overlooked by the voters regardless of our current performance. As the old adage goes, "If you wanna be the best, you got to beat the best." And the Cats quite frankly have a poor showing against the DSUs. Last year, Cat fans finally got what we were asking for - NDSU on our home field. And we still managed to pee down our leg and lose that game.
NDSU currently holds a five-game win streak against MSU, with the Cats last victory coming in 2005 - a year after the Bison joined the FCS. SDSU is on a 2-game win streak against the Cats and is 5-2 overall versus MSU. Outside of the semifinal in 2021 against the Jackrabbits, our only other win against them was in 2004.
So - if you believe there is some poll bias when it comes to ranking MSU versus the DSUs, you could point to this and think that we may not get the respect we deserve until we can finally prove it on the field.
"I love Bozeman. I love these people. I love the Cats. I even love this weather. You think I'm gonna pick Missoula? You're crazy - gimme the Cat head!!" -- Lee Corso, ESPN GameDay

No problem with having a discussion. Or pointing out things that look odd in pairings. Reasonable people are going to look at those things with differences of opinion.
But theres plenty different opinions on the so-called "screw job" in 2022. But in reasonable people can disagree...well, then it obviously, by definition, wasn't a 'screw job." It was a difference of opinion.

All I'll say is that if you look at recent playoff brackets other than 2022 there have been multiple times when NDSU and SDSU were seeded in the same half of the bracket. 2022 was a really weird year and I can see why maybe they didn't want to set up MVFC vs MVFC and Big Sky vs Big Sky semifinal games. I also wouldn't read too much into what a new committee will do this year or in the future based on the weird 2022 situation they had to navigate then.

Hmm....
2023 - SDSU - #1; NDSU - #9 - opposite side of the bracket
2022 - SDSU - #1; NDSU - #3 - opposite side
2021 - NDSU - #2; SDSU - #9 - opposite side
2019 - NDSU - #1; SDSU - #7 - opposite side
2018 - NDSU -#1; SDSU - #5 - SAME side
2017 - NDSU - #2; SDSU - #5 - Opposite side
2016 - NDSU - #1; SDSU - #8 - SAME side
Before 2016, SDSU was a marginal playoff team and wasn't seeded. So in 5 of the last 7 years, they have been on the opposite side of the bracket including the last 4 years. In 11 of the last 12 full years, only NDSU or SDSU have won the championship. I would say until someone dethrones one of these two teams as the national champion, the committee will likely put them on opposite sides of the bracket and make a MSU/UM/USD/UCD/ETC defeat them in the semis and in the Natty. I don't think this is some sort of conspiracy against MSU or the Big Sky or any team. I think it is rooted in historical fact on the field of play. Maybe SDSU will lose a second FCS game this year and the rules will change but until that happens...

You sort of make the point some of us ask. 8,5,5,7,9 and 9 as the seed for the 2nd best seed of two along with 3. Never been 1 and 2, yet 5 of 7 years they are opposite side. So they typically dint have to go thru each other. Good programs and travel, weather, hone field have helped create their advantage. As you say you have to knock them off, that starts with their conference and in playoffs, but not having to see each other has certainly helped that.
It also shows that the argument of the power of DSU's is a little faulty. It has been NDSU alone till last few years
