WBB vs UC Davis

Post by MSU01 » Sun Nov 17, 2024 7:26 am

If you went to bed last night hoping you had seen the last of UC Davis for a while...here they are again today! The Bobcats continue their run of home games to start the year at 2:00 this afternoon. Davis is 1-2 so far this year with their two D-1 opponents being San Diego State (83-77 loss in OT at home), and Stanford (69-56 loss away). They were picked to finish third in the Big West this year, so should be a pretty strong test for the Bobcats. And if MSU gets up by 22 points in the fourth quarter, maybe don't turn off the TV just quite yet...

No kidding... I was feeling good about my prediction for 55 minutes.

Cats look good in person. Moving the ball well and shooting 4 of 11 from 3. Davis is getting to the rim easier than I would like but overall a great defensive effort. This team is fun to watch!

Saw the UC Davis girls coming out of security as we were heading to baggage claim at BZN.
Another nice win for the Bobcats over the Aggies!

Thanks for this, I had a chuckle when the score was 71-49 from 7-6 minutes left in the fourth. You called it.

The Cats just keep on rolling! UC Davis is no slouch, in their previous game they were tied with Stanford early in the fourth quarter before things got away from them. Excited to see how they do against Utah on Sunday, that will be a major test but I think MSU can absolutely hang with them if they play well.

Another very impressive win and performance today. If you haven't come out to see this team yet, here's the main difference between last year's team and this year's: With SO MUCH depth, the Cats push it constantly on both ends of the court. There is never a slowdown, None. It's pedal to the metal all the way. Coach Bin just rotates the players in and out and runs and guns it. And just think, Taylor Jansson and Lexi Deden are yet to play but will soon. So with the run and gun the Cats are getting more possessions and scoring more points.

By the way, the shocker of the day to me was UM whipping up on the Washington Huskies. I watched some of the UM game against Cal Poly and UM really looked weak. One thing that our Bobcats DO need to work on is guarding the three point line and also cuts to the basket for layups. I am confident they will get better on that. But the bottom line, more people need to come out to enjoy watching this team.

Agree with nearly everything you are saying but I am curious what or why you indicate their 3 point defense guarding is a weakness. What are you seeing? Reason I ask is that through 4 games the Cats have allowed only 26% shooting by opponents from the arc. If we continued at that pace we would likely be the best in the conference…as comparison best in conference last year was Eastern Washington which only allowed opponents to shoot 28% from the arc. There were a couple times tonight where they seemed to have more space to shoot from the arc but that’s going to happen occasionally but overall we were relentless everywhere on the court. Sample size is only 4 games but at this rate our D is allowing 51 points per game…about 7 points less than last year which was the best defense of all time.

Edit: and yes I know that stats are skewed by Chadron game with only 4 games played and yes I know Davis shot 31.8% from arc tonight (season average was over 33.7%)…..but still overall D was excellent. Fun to watch.

The only thing I saw with the Cats guarding the three-point line was Davis getting open shooters by rotating the ball. Is there a way to prevent that? Contesting passes? Something else?

The Bobcats are allowing under 60 PPG and forcing an average of 23 turnovers per game against their D-1 opponents so far. If they actually get BETTER on defense, then we're all in for a special season. MSU is playing 12 right now and I'm assuming that number will only go up when Deden and Janssen return to the lineup. The three biggest minute totals off the bench yesterday were the three true freshmen - what an amazing recruiting class this was for Binford. The Big Sky is going to be amazingly fun to watch this year as there are some other really good teams too.

Do you think Jansson and Deden can play at that higher pace or will the game slow a little when they are on floor.

I have been wondering the same thing about the return of Deden & Jannsen. Neither one of them is fleet of foot, however, Deden has always been good with her defensive hands.

Just my lame way of looking at is that if you are causing teams to turn the ball over 20 times you ARE contesting a lot of passes and getting a lot of steals. There were quite a few “tipped” passes last night as well as steals.

Another of my lame observations going into the game was that #14 Tora Sabel was scoring a bit less than 25% of their points averaging 17 ppg. She shot 33% from the arc last year and was shooting 39% from the arc so far this year. None of the other starting 5 players for UCD had shot over 10 from the arc and only 1 other of the starting 5 was over 30% from the arc. Side note on Sabel is that she was Honorable Mention Big West her first year and last year was 2nd Team All Big West…she scored in double figures 28 of 30 games last year. So my first observation/thought with my “pseudo coaching hat on” going into the contest would be to stop Sabel and make someone else on the team step up to beat us. And we did!!!…..allowing her only 9 points and 2 of 6 from the arc. And as a whole keeping the UCD team scoring well below their average.

Aucat made a good observation about the back door passes too. UCD was very good at utilizing BDs and moved well to get the pass. I don’t know if anyone noticed it but coming out the second half UCD was on fire running the back door plays…there were 3 or 4 in a row and I was shaking my head. I don’t know if anyone else noticed but Coach Bin called an early time out in second half and it immediately had an impact on reducing the number and effectiveness of the BDs. I was trying to remember any after that…I’m sure there were but it was much less impactful.

Fun team to watch.

A REAL test comes up next against Utah in Utah!! If this team can hold it close with Utah we will have a real measure of the Lady Cats. Utah beat Weber by 40, beat Southern Utah by 53 and lost to Northwestern by 2!!! They went to Sweet 16 two years ago and were rated in top 25 last year with a first round win in the NCAA tourney.

I don't think your analysis is lame at all! I did notice the proliferation of back door cuts and was glad to see them get cleaned up. Go Cats!

I was in Seattle a few weeks ago and saw UC Davis play UW. UCD had a five point lead in the second half but lost.

An interesting twist to the Utah game, their coach was just hired by the LA Sparks.
