In 2021 UTM scored zero points on offense against MSU and their only touchdown came on a fumble return. I expect similar results this time but turn the fumble return into a garbage time TD against the backup defense after MSU calls off the dogs.
We were having to play our backup QB who was playing on one leg with our top receiver out and our #2 receiver playing hurt too. I'm not making excuses but our offense was extremely banged up in that game. This 2024 team is much better than our 2021 team
The Bobcats had a freshman QB starting his first game that day. Our previous QB starter went in the portal before the game.
Your starting QB went into the portal because he was going to lose his job to Mellott. Let's not act like that really hamstrung you guys.
This will be a good test for our working theory that all the power in the FCS is west of the Mississippi. You guys look the part, for sure. This is the deepest, most complete team we have maybe ever had here. Built over 4 years to make a run. I'll put it this way... i think you're going to be between a 16 and 20 point underdog in this game, and it would be an upset of massive, epic scale at this level if you beat us at home. That's not trying to denigrate your team at all. I just think our team is a big time outfit and nearly unbeatable at home.
In your opinion or vision for Saturday, what's a UT-Martin upset win look like? What has to go right for you? Thanks for joining and chatting along!
First off, I come in peace. Haha
Honestly, I think something similar to our Missouri State win in 2021 in the first round. The Bears had 6 turnovers in that game (3 INTs & 3 Fumbles). We'll need some big pass plays, which we had 0 against you all in 2021.
I'm just glad Ifanse isn't there any more. You guys rushed for nearly 400 yards that day.
Mellott is obviously VERY good, but we have three very big and fast LBs who are all seniors or graduates including one who is up for the Buck Buchanan award.
Are you making the trip to Bozeman?
Yes, I was there in 2021 and I'm planning on being there this year too.
Side note: In 2021 Coach Simpson's oldest son, Ty Simpson, took Westview High School (our local high school) to the state championship. Westview played the same day as the UTM at Montana State game.
Ty is currently the backup QB at Alabama.
Graham Simpson, coach's other son, is a freshman QB at Westview and he's led them to the state championship. That game is being played Friday morning at 11am. Graham is one of the best young QBs in the country.
It'll be interesting to see how coach handles that situation.
Kinda crazy that both times UTM has made it to the second round they've played Montana State and at the same time those two times the local high school team has made it to the state championship game with a Simpson at QB.

Watched Simpson's post-game from NH, seems like a good guy. How is local media coverage? Is there typically a Monday presser that gets posted, beat writers we should know, etc?
Check out the Skyhawk Sports Talk Podcast. They post the newest episode on Monday afternoon on YouTube. Coach does a Let's Talk Football event each week at the football facility. WBBJ and WPSD will be interviewing him this week I imagine.

That is really cool! Also, I'd be shocked if they altered the travel plans whatsoever based on a high school game. I'd be even more shocked if the head coach didn't travel with the team. So assuming they were chartering an afternoon flight to Bozeman, he should be good to watch his son. If not, there is always the streaming option.

I would think that you think Martin would come in Thursday night and get acclimated Friday
I was going to make fun of UTM having their coaches show at a local chicken joint and then I remembered the Cats have their coaches show at a local chicken joint.
@Skyhawks84 You mentioned your tight end being injured by UNH on an “awkward” tackle. We had a pretty good discussion about “hip-drop tackles” as they were used against our team to deplete our starting lineup. I’m no expert at all, but when I first saw that takedown and the injury, I immediately backed up and watched it again. It might not be textbook, but that looked pretty hip-droppy to me. The tackler ended up getting his body laid across your tight ends legs and then really pulled him down hard backward. It surely looked like he added an extra move at the end that said injury more than tackle.
Did anyone else see this? What do you think about that tackle?
I watched some the UTM vs. Tennessee Tech game....and I wasn't that impressed. I felt like I was watching an NAIA game. Not saying that I think we are going to absolutely destroy them, but I really think if the Cats show up like they have all season and the crowd is 15K-18K and up, we shouldn't have much of a problem.

Not only that — it looks like each team features twin brothers. You have the Maddox brothers and we have the Dowler brothers. Your kicker is named Van Winkle. Our shared high school football stadium is named Van Winkle Stadium.
