It’s kind of funny how Bobby has lowered the expectations of most of their fanbase. Nobody in FCS has better facilities, yet they got absolutely smoked by both MSU and SDSU this season. Outside of Bergen getting them to OT and then playoff wins last year, Bobby hasn’t done a thing in his second stint that would give him that much job security unless the boosters don’t want championships.iaafan wrote: ↑Mon Dec 09, 2024 7:17 amA year ago I was saying he was going to step down. Upon learning more about the situation I don’t think he’ll leave for at least five years. It’s my understanding that the big money boosters will bail including the top two and they’ve combined to put more money into the program than the next 20 top boosters and most of them are Bobby people. UM has a super easy schedule next year and it will get them in the playoffs and probably a very high seed. The fans, like last year, will consider this improvement and continue to keep Hauck from getting on the hot seat.

I honestly hope we don’t take a single player in the portal. Continue to bring in young recruits out of high school and build your program from the ground up. It’s worked really well so far. Cats are deep, and it’s not due to the portal. Gris on the other hand are beginning to rely too much on it.

Re: Any Portal News Yet
The Cats have around 15 former portal players on the roster and many of them are starters. If the Cats can locate a good fit or need in the portal, then grab that player. You are right not to rely on the portal, but definitely use it to cover needs.Mtcatfan wrote: ↑Mon Dec 09, 2024 9:12 pmI honestly hope we don’t take a single player in the portal. It really is a beautiful thing. Hauck rode all the way to frisco on the back of a punt returner, which bought him several years of support. Then next years schedule is so comically easy Missoula Sentinel could go 9-3 and a playoff seed, which is going to buy him another hand full of years. As iaafan says, he has another 5 years before his seat even starts to get warm. You are right with how much expectations have lowered over there. They seem perfectly fine scheduling D2 schools and bottom feeder of the FCS so they can walk to an 8-3 record, win a cupcake playoff game in the first round before getting ran off the field in the second round #RTDPapaG wrote: ↑Mon Dec 09, 2024 8:55 pmIt’s kind of funny how Bobby has lowered the expectations of most of their fanbase. Re: Any Portal News Yet
I’d disagree on not taking a single guy. Guys like McCulloch, Davis, R. Jones, Hall, and Polidore have all been great contributors to the team as a whole so filling gaps is a strong way to go if you get the right guys.Mtcatfan wrote: ↑Mon Dec 09, 2024 9:12 pmI honestly hope we don’t take a single player in the portal. On the other hand, when one relies super heavily on the portal at the expense of building a program, that’s no good…not that we’ve seen a case study on that or anything elsewhere.

The program is clearly at a point that they don’t rely on it for the bulk of their team, but there is talent to be had out there.
If the fit is right and they can help the team, bring them in.
Julius Davis
Rohan Jones
Ty McCullough
Dru Polidore
Jon Johnson
Cole Sain
Just to name a few…
This year’s team would look a bit different if we didn’t bring anyone in.

Yep gotta portal for some skill talent every year, for depth, all that. The world we live in. And it's been a boon at times even though we've also lost talent there. How do you replace a Derryk snell? Portal. And you somehow get MORE explosive at tight end. Crazy in and of itself.Catsrgrood wrote: ↑Mon Dec 09, 2024 9:36 pmStrong disagree on that.Mtcatfan wrote: ↑Mon Dec 09, 2024 9:12 pmI honestly hope we don’t take a single player in the portal. Yep. Totally right. Once you get addicted to the portal it’s a downward spiral. So, it’s hit the portal and hope. Again.Prodigal Cat wrote: ↑Mon Dec 09, 2024 10:37 amYeah this was kinda my point. They graduated nearly 30 seniors but only signed 14ish high school kids. Now with Fife in the portal and who knows how many else its seems as though they have quite a few open scholarships available.Lord Vigo wrote: ↑Mon Dec 09, 2024 9:59 amThat could be and maybe that works. Maybe they’re thinking he will be the blitzing linebacker like Riley Wilson was this year and move Riley to a more normal linebacker position.
It's also another guy for them that they would bring in with only one year of eligibility. So if it doesn't work right away, it doesn't work at all. And even if it does work, they're right back to having to fill that spot again in 2026.
That's another big difference between the two programs-- UM not only brings in a lot more transfers; they also bring in more guys who are one and done.
The Cats go with quality over quantity and focus on guys who can play 2+ years (e.g. Davis, Jones, McCullouch, Alexander, King, Sain, Reed, Eckert, Johnson, Polidore).
In 2016 Choate came in and the Cats stunk for a couple seasons. What he was doing though was building a base with which to have continued success year in and out with home grown, in house developed players. The proof is in the fact that I fully expect the Cats to win Friday and make their 4th semifinal in 5 seasons and move on to a 2nd Frisco appearance. Its sustained success that only MSU, NDSU, SDSU can claim. The only way UM could replicate this is do the same thing. They point to last season but that was a one off flash in the pan, they also had zero shot at winning that game. They should use their schollies like you said, to bring in high school or 2+ year players that can grow in the system. Accept that next season could be a rough one but they would come out the other side a better program. Good to see though as a Cat fan that they are still buying 1 year lottery tickets.

Ok I agree. Not a single guy in the portal was a stretch. I just hope we only use it when needs arise which is how we’ve approached it so far. I’ve said it before but the more you rely on the portal, the harder it will become to recruit the top high school players.

Bobby’s only chance to #RTD was to land a bunch of stud recruits (mainly transfers) and gain a ton of attraction. But he screwed that up and pretty much all of the transfers weren’t that great. Just shows how big of a gap between our recruiting and theirs has.MTFootball wrote: ↑Mon Dec 09, 2024 9:53 pmYep. Totally right. Once you get addicted to the portal it’s a downward spiral. Yeah, it was one of those tweets you see from D2 and D3 coaches asking for recruits to DM their film to the coach. I’m guessing someone higher up on the staff saw it, freaked out a bit, and had him take it down. That’s not the way coaches at higher level programs recruit these days.Catsrgrood wrote: ↑Mon Dec 09, 2024 9:36 pmSo what was this tweet? My opinion on the situation over in the land of dark pink is that Booby Hauck Tuah has been playing E I E I Yat over FeeFee because all those Walmartians wearing their Walmart G Wiz gear have said Booby can't develop players. So Booby wants to prove them wrong.

I think his seat is much warmer than you think. The number of empty seats in their last two games is proof that the success of last season is a distant memory. If a lot of guys enter the portal this season, I can see it getting even uglier. Keep in mind that all time Griz great Shannon Cate was let go despite her place in history.110010110 wrote: ↑Mon Dec 09, 2024 9:19 pmIt really is a beautiful thing.
