They are losing 10 of 11 starters, all 6 LB on depth chart. 6 of 11 starters on offense, 7 if count Fife.
Wow… that is going to be really hard to rebuild their roster, and with that many new players they’ll need to come in, it will be even harder to build chemistry. On the other hand, I feel really good about what we’ll be able to put on the field next year as long as we can hang on to the players that we have!
That was my first reaction too, thinking man - they are losing so many starters they are going to suck! Then I quickly remembered what a wise coach once said - "Sometimes it's not a bad thing when you lose a bunch of starters." There is truth to that.
Yes there is. I don’t know what the Gr*z have in underclassmen as far as impact players, but it could be a needed reset for them. We are losing a lot of senior starters also, but I think we have a lot of talent that will get their opportunities next year. I’m hoping that could be a reason for why we don’t lose many players to the portal. A lot of our younger players know that there will be starting positions up for grabs.

I think they are both very bought into the culture and love it in Bozeman………. BUT………. When you have Power 5 schools offering ridiculous amounts of money that can change things.

I’m not gonna say specifics of what I’ve heard cuz I don’t want to spread rumors. But I heard Moore already has some offers that would be impossible to turn down.

Just enjoy these talented players while they are here, for as long as that is (hopefully their entire careers).
It would suck to lose a player as talented as Moore, but if he leaves that can also be used as a huge recruiting tool for MSU moving forward to compete with FBS programs for high school recruits. Instead of going FBS and sitting on the bench for two years, come to MSU and play right away. If you're good enough to move up and want to do so, the FBS programs will find you and give you your NIL money.
I wouldn't be a fan of that recruiting pitch. Come to MSU and then portal out to FBS for a big NIL score!

No thanks. Just my opinion.
Me either but that is exactly the recruiting tactic they are using at Idaho

It sucks, but that's today's reality in college football. Especially at the FCS level. More and more, we are becoming just farm system teams for the FBS.

I heard Rush, Omar, and Seabass all got 100k to portal out of MSU last year. Can't confirm, though.
Is it more than that?
How many players who portaled to FBS from MSU have made it to at least a practice squad in NFL. Showing g # that stayed and made it vs # that left and did might be a good recruiting tool.

I get so tired of the “I heard or rumor is someone was offered this much money”. Not calling anyone out. Just think it’s one of the most annoying things about college football and recruiting these days. It’s all hearsay and non of it is confirmed. I think all players who receive NIL should be required to publicly disclose earnings and we can throw this bullsh!t system on its head.

On a side note, does anyone have any idea what amount of $$ is available through our own Bobcat Collective? I would assume it would not be enough to keep the likes of Moore or compete with a P5 or G5 school but is it enough to match or beat some offers?

And I wouldn't say "Impossible". If memory serves, there's a kid playing for NDSU that turned down $1,000,000 to stay in Fargo this season.
Yep but they gave money and then he got hurt, didn't play all year and is leaving. Bet those boosters who ponied up aren't happy.

I think I saw an x post with NIL totals for larger schools. Top were high and dropped off pretty quick. If top 5 go $1 mill, next 10 $500,00] and 100,000 for real of top 50 guys that is $13,500,500. Can't imagine FCS kids getting that guaranteed to move up at very many places.

That seems off, not saying it’s not what you heard, but $1 million? I’d be shocked if that was accurate.

I’m sure the premise is correct, the kid turned down some money to stay at NDSU, I just really doubt it was $1 million he turned down.

We can be a fan or not be a fan of it, but the reality of college sports today is that if you're not using that pitch at least at some level you're going to quickly fall behind the schools that are using it. Were the MSU teams that had Ifanse, Valdez, Aigbedion, Reimer, etc. on them better for having those guys even though they didn't stay for their whole careers? Hard to argue that the answer isn't a resounding yes.

To me the best strategy in recruiting is exactly what MSU is doing. First priority is to get the best in-state players who already have ties to Montana and are more likely to want to stay at MSU for four or five years even if FBS programs eventually come calling. For the out-of-state players, I say 100% sell them on the stories of the players I mentioned above but then also work hard to build a relationship and retain them once they are here. But some players will always leave whether it's for NIL money, a bigger school, or maybe just personal reasons or MSU and/or Bozeman not being a good fit for them.

Like a dog to its vomit so goes the gris and the Portal. This will be the norm when you build with it instead of normal recruits. Have to refill the cupboard every offseason.

To be fair if you look at who they offer in state, they lose to the Cats, Tech, or they don't pan out. I seriously think their coaching staff isn't good at evaluating and recruiting talent. Portal kinda negates that because you can see it on the field or someone else did it for them.
FIFY
And to build off your losing the recruiting battle point, they’re not able to sell the “Grizzly way” anymore. They can’t use the same sales pitch they used 30 years ago. But the program chose “Return to Dominance”. That phrase oozes the narcissism that has surrounded that football team. Cause now they’re 5 years into Bob 2.0 and the wheels are falling off…. “Are we still returning to dominance?”

I’ll believe that the gris coaches aren’t good at recruiting talent or the wheels are falling off the program when um has multiple losing seasons in a row and their attendance tanks.

The top of the fcs has caught up to them, and they are the only “top tier” team that has taken to the portal to fill massive holes and try and plug and play one and done guys. MSU, xDSU’s, and some others are using the portal to supplement the talent they are recruiting and building themselves. They’ll always attract talent due to resources and atmosphere, but before their natty run their attendance was dipping and they weren’t selling out WaGriz. At Cat/Griz this year, a Griz buddy of mine was ashamed describing their atmosphere at home against Portland State—said it was probably the lowest attended games he had ever been to. They caught fire last year in a down year for MSU/NDSU. Good on them for taking advantage, but look at their average conference finish the last handful of years. IMO, the “best of the rest” that Colter was questioning might be the Idaho Vandals earlier this season, is UM.

Look. You have to be an all time bad coach to have multiple losing seasons at UM in the BSC. It's hardly possible.

A bad season for UM isn't the same as a bad season for UNC. A good season for UNC, honestly, would be a terrible season for UM. Different programs have different expectations. With all the advantages they have compared to the vast majority of the FCS, they should be a consistent top 10 team. The same is true of MSU. There really is no excuse to be any worse than that.

I think Hauck has been there for 7 or 8 years now.
Wow you’re right. Time flys. Next year is year 8.

Like a dog to its vomit so goes the gris and the Portal. This will be the norm when you build with it instead of normal recruits. Have to refill the cupboard every offseason.

I’ll believe that the gris coaches aren’t good at recruiting talent or the wheels are falling off the program when um has multiple losing seasons in a row and their attendance tanks.

Look, I didn’t see any evidence of “wheels falling off.” UM is regularly investing in their program, in the top two in attendance every year, in the playoffs, and one year removed from being in the National Championship game. If a supposed down year for them means the wheels are falling off the program, then that’s great news. I just don’t believe it, at least not yet. I want to see more evidence in the most important results. Sheesh, now you guys have me defending um. My week is ruined.

They’re downwards trending. Poor recruiting, poor development, and they were upper class heavy this past season. The immediate future does not look bright.

When I say pre poor, I mean poor by their standards.

Not to mention the unbalanced schedules in this league skew things too. Our schedule in 2022 was pretty damn easy and the griz was more difficult. Last year our schedule was ridiculous playing like 4 ranked teams on the road. This year our schedule was easy, but so was the griz schedule.

Next year our schedule is brutal again, more so considering who we lose this year. Meanwhile the griz have an absolute cake schedule with 8 games at home and only 4 on the road. They literally won’t travel the month of September!

Point being, schedules play a big part of how good or bad a team looks and ultimately what their record is. From the outside looking in the griz are a bit of a trainwreck right now. But their schedule is going to mask some of that next season at least.

I’m interested to see if their staff will adjust and adapt to the current landscape of college football because they don’t seem to be. Yes they made the chipper last year. Can’t take that away. But aside from last year I don’t know if they’ve ever finished better than 3rd in the league since Bobby came back. That’s crazy to me considering all the advantages they have compared to the rest of the FCS. Like BB said, they should be a top 5-10 team at worst every year. And I say the same about the Cats.
