Bergen is out of eligibility. He created a mirage over the past two years. I think you'll find some wheels on the side of the road by midseason next year.AFCAT wrote: ↑Thu Dec 12, 2024 10:50 pmLook, I didn’t see any evidence of “wheels falling off.” UM is regularly investing in their program, in the top two in attendance every year, in the playoffs, and one year removed from being in the National Championship game. If a supposed down year for them means the wheels are falling off the program, then that’s great news. I just don’t believe it, at least not yet. I want to see more evidence in the most important results. Sheesh, now you guys have me defending um. My week is ruined.BelligerentBobcat wrote: ↑Thu Dec 12, 2024 10:14 pmLook. Cause now they’re 5 years into Bob 2.0 and the wheels are falling off…. “Are we still returning to dominance?”MSU Doc wrote: ↑Thu Dec 12, 2024 2:46 pmFIFYProdigal Cat wrote: ↑Thu Dec 12, 2024 10:00 amLike a dog to its vomit so goes the gris and the Portal. To be fair if you look at who they offer in state, they lose to the Cats, Tech, or they don't pan out. I seriously think their coaching staff isn't good at evaluating and recruiting talent. Portal kinda negates that because you can see it on the field or someone else did it for them.
A bad season for UM isn't the same as a bad season for UNC. A good season for UNC, honestly, would be a terrible season for UM. Different programs have different expectations. With all the advantages they have compared to the vast majority of the FCS, they should be a consistent top 10 team. The same is true of MSU. There really is no excuse to be any worse than that.

Re: Any Portal News Yet
One refrain I heard pretty often from some media and especially from Griz fans this season is that the Cats are super senior-laden and are going to lose a ton this off-season, which would give UM the opportunity to catch up to them.
So far, it's looking like the opposite is true.
Between graduations and transfers, UM has lost 24/44 from their most recent 2-Deep, including 15 starters. There are rumblings of more to come.
That Cats are slated to lose 13. Even if we allow for some portal defections, the number should be around 15.

I’ve been cheering Cat Football for many decades now, and can’t remember a team with greater depth than this one. Assuming we don’t get portal poached too heavily, I think the train keeps chugging’ away.cats2506 wrote: ↑Fri Dec 13, 2024 10:34 amA lot of Cat underclassmen have had game reps this year, not so much over there.Lord Vigo wrote: ↑Fri Dec 13, 2024 10:30 amOne refrain I heard pretty often from some media and especially from Griz fans this season is that the Cats are super senior-laden and are going to lose a ton this off-season, which would give UM the opportunity to catch up to them.

I would love to hear @TomCat88 on his take on the depth Vigen has built here, and how it stacks up historically.

Re: Any Portal News Yet
Yeah, we lose our share of guys, especially really important ones, but we also didn't keep our starters in for the full 60 minutes in the games that were over by the end of the 3rd quarter (which was most of them) just to try and score more points. Instead we put backups (and their backups) in to get them game action and develop them. So even if we were to lose more players than the griz, we'd still be in a better situation.cats2506 wrote: ↑Fri Dec 13, 2024 10:34 amA lot of Cat underclassmen have had game reps this year, not so much over there.Lord Vigo wrote: ↑Fri Dec 13, 2024 10:30 amOne refrain I heard pretty often from some media and especially from Griz fans this season is that the Cats are super senior-laden and are going to lose a ton this off-season, which would give UM the opportunity to catch up to them.

My definition of wheels falling off is a sub .500 season and no playoffs. I fervently wish that would be where the frizzzzz are headed but there is little chance of that, especially as they have EIGHT home games next year. EIGHT??!! Come on, man. That should not be allowed.

The wheels have not come off the UM program to this point, however the pattern that they're in with regards to the portal is accelerating and could go south in a hurry. As we all saw with Florida State this last year, when you rely that heavily on the portal, the outcomes are really high variance.

For all the advantages they have over 95% of the field, I don't know if they'll ever miss the playoffs completely, at least not in consecutive years. They'll always have their facilities and there are only so many FCS teams competing for FCS players in the Mountain and Pacific time zones. Plus, they won a national championship 23 years ago and that clearly means something to the committee.84CatGrad wrote: ↑Fri Dec 13, 2024 11:17 am"Look, I didn’t see any evidence of “wheels falling off.” UM is regularly investing in their program, in the top two in attendance every year, in the playoffs, and one year removed from being in the National Championship game. My definition of wheels falling off is not being seeded and having to go on the road and lose in the opening round, regularly. Losing Cat-griz nearly every year and then having to go on the road to end your season over Thanksgiving week would be a depressing tradition for griz fans, nearly as bad as not making the playoffs. That limbo between complete irrelevance and just happy to be here would kill their fanbase.

Re: Any Portal News Yet
With the history and resources they have they should really be a top 10 team each year, I would say that MSU has those resources also and are in the same situation. With the suboptimal year and the exodus of players in both graduation and the portal, this is a critical time for their program. Rebuilding through the portal is not a high percentage situation at the FCS level, even when they have some of the best resources in the division.
I'm definitely not saying that they are dead yet, but I see some buzzards circling above.

If you had to rank the in-state recruiting classes for every team in Montana, would the griz even finish second?

What kind of scholarship did the Griz offer him? If it was less than a full ride, and you're going more for school than NFL dreams, hard not to take a full scholarship from Carroll
