Curious about this promotion

Post by bobcatmaniac » Wed Sep 06, 2006 8:19 pm

When I received my car license renewal in the mail this week, on the back I noticed our fair state is promoting the um license plate. You can either purchase the um main hall plate or the grizzly (old) plate. Don't you think they should endorse ALL schools? Whose idea was this????

This was brought up before...if I recall correctly, UM bought the ad space on the back, so it isn't the state promoting UM over MSU. MSU could have probably done the same thing had they wanted to.

Yep, it is here http://www.bobcatnation.com/bobcatboard ... php?t=4893

Note this post by GOKATS:
OK, here is the gig. I talked to the head of this division in Deer Lodge. She informed me that with so many specialty plates now available, the year the "Lewis and Clark " plates came out ( I don't remember what year she said, but it was 3-4 years ago) the department came out with the policy that any of the specialty plate backers could buy the right to have the promo for their plates on the back of all renewal cards sent out statewide for the year.

The cost to obtain this promo is the cost of sending out the renewal cards, which this year was approx. $3,600, damn cheap when it comes to fund raising. I don't remember exactly, but I think that of the additional $30 for MSU plates the university receives $22, so an organization would have to get 160+ folks in Montana to support their cause to break even.

The right to sponsor comes on a first come basis and is booked by different entities through 2009, so the next available slot is 2010. The lady I spoke with didn't have the list of who has committed the next few years, ( MSU may already be on the list) , but it may be food for thought for the MSU administration.
Edit: Oops, apparently GOKATS searches faster than I do.

Thanks for the information. Gives you something to think about. I would hope the people at the motor vehicle dept. wouldn't just do that without compensation. I am glad to hear all entities are able to do this.
