Is it irony that I think a top MSU priority should be keeping Coach Herrin out of the “portal?”

I don’t feel like this is a huge surprise. Never seemed to quite live up to the hype of what he could have been at this level.
He wasn’t a big part of the offense this year and now with Tommy leaving, I’m sure there is more unknown than before as to how good the passing game will be going forward.
I don’t love it, but I’m not super surprised and I don’t think it’s a massive blow to the team, based on this years results.

I'm really glad he shared this, for what it says, but also his comment about not being worried about 2025. He's got way better inside knowledge than any of us. He's one who we need to keep on staff more than some others!

Yes, a bummer, but the Cats are a run first offense. That could change with a new QB, but not likely. He just didn't have that breakout year after sitting last year. Felt bad for the struggles he one through with the NCAA stuff, but sometimes that's how things fall.Catsrgrood wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2025 11:15 amI don’t feel like this is a huge surprise. This feels like a guy that just wants to see the field more and catch more balls. Definitely not moving back up to the FBS. It's too bad we're losing him though because he should have been a primary target next year. I'm worried about King being WR2.Catsrgrood wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2025 11:15 amI don’t feel like this is a huge surprise. I don’t know… he wasn’t a primary target this year. On paper, he was WR #1. But Ty and Taco were clearly the top 2 options in the pass game and it wasn’t close. I don’t know if it was him just not being open, or him just not getting the ball thrown his way enough when he was open, or a combination of the two. But he just never broke out here or was a big threat at any point during the season that I can recall.coloradocat wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2025 11:20 amThis feels like a guy that just wants to see the field more and catch more balls. This one is a bit surprising and disappointing because other than "catching more passes" not really sure what the play is here. He was a solid piece for us, but not really a candidate to move up. Fourth school in four years will be a huge red flag for most teams. Maybe he wants to move even further down to a more pass-happy offense where he can really be "the guy."coloradocat wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2025 11:20 amThis feels like a guy that just wants to see the field more and catch more balls. He wasn’t the top passing option on paper or field. 4th option, at best.Catsrgrood wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2025 11:27 amI don’t know… he wasn’t a primary target this year. On paper, he was WR #1. I would guess he'll go to another FCS school, probably stay in the BSC. He could have a solid final year on any of the bottom half teams.Travelingcat wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2025 11:28 amThis one is a bit surprising and disappointing because other than "catching more passes" not really sure what the play is here. Ryan King was the #3 option behind Taco and Ty by the end of the year in terms of WR options. Hey by the way I really hope Ryan King doesn't leave! Alexander leaving is too bad because we really stuck our neck out for him to get him eligible. Also, by transferring he's likely going to get G5 and FCS offers but who knows. He's throwing away an opportunity to be a captain and vocal leader of an offense that needs new leadership. If he thinks he's going to go to the league transferring to a heavy passing offense, good luck.BelligerentBobcat wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2025 11:29 amHe wasn’t the top passing option on paper or field. 4th option, at best.Catsrgrood wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2025 11:27 amI don’t know… he wasn’t a primary target this year. What are your thoughts on King? The biggest thing I saw from him this year was drops. He only caught 15 balls all year and it seemed like he had more drops than the rest of the team combined. He really needs to work with the QBs in the offseason if he's going to be a viable option in 25.VimSince03 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2025 11:36 amRyan King was the #3 option behind Taco and Ty by the end of the year in terms of WR options. Re: Bobcat Portal News Only
McCutcheon had a drop problem too before he figured it out. Ryan was the slot fade guy so that means he's catching those 50/50 balls more often than not in practice. Definitely agree there needs to be a great offseason with a new QB and our pass-catchers. Would be really great if they had an indoor football field to practice on in the winter...oh wait.coloradocat wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2025 11:45 amWhat are your thoughts on King? Agree, Alexander obviously thinks he’s doing what’s best for his future, however, just seems like a cheesy move. Lots of talk surrounding him, lots of support from the admin and coaching staff to get him eligible and then leaves. Who knows, maybe he has a great season elsewhere, but lots of red flags with these individuals that love team hoping, would consider them players, not teammates, and you need a team to win a championship.VimSince03 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2025 11:36 amRyan King was the #3 option behind Taco and Ty by the end of the year in terms of WR options. Re: Bobcat Portal News Only
Jones' numbers are a little skewed because of the timing of when Scottre went down. We started playing better teams one right after the other and they all started to stack the box and dare us to throw. One thing that stood out to me about Jones is that if we needed a yard, he got it. Even if the other team knew we were going to run it and stacked the box. I don't know what his percentage was but he just seemed to get it done every time. Better than many of the "power" backs we have had recently.RootinfortheCats wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2025 11:07 amI feel Adam Jones is one of those dedicated future team leaders to build around.gtapp wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2025 10:25 amI will miss all these player but I honestly think we replace Jones and Humphrey with no drop off. There’s no guarantee that whoever replaces Jones, Humphrey and Moore won’t be better. Players leaving motivate players that stay. I bet guys like Jefferson, Coon and Murphy/Valcin aren’t upset in the slightest and are probably working harder and are more focused.
I think much of the half-criticism he got about not being as tough a runner as Scottre and Julius was pretty undeserved. I rewatched many of the games and he is great after contact. I am sure those numbers are available somewhere.
He has the mental toughness and competitiveness needed to be a team leader.
Give him another off season in the strength/conditioning and nutrition program and watch the beast emerge.

So they must do exit interviews or some end of season meetings individually? I don't know how that works for sure. I imagine that tells the players what role they may fill next season and leads to these transfer decisions. Of course everything is a competition, and open for the taking, but I suppose if they feel that they weren't used, or got jumped by another guy throughout the season, like White did by Coon, and then hear that they need to compete with player B for a spot, some just choose to bail and look for another school to try to shine?
