Question... when these players are promised large amounts of money, NIL or whatever, like the rumored $300k for Scottre, does that also include a tuition scholarship, food, room and board, etc? I read a comment on a post where someone said if they're getting paid that much hopefully they're not getting free schooling too. It hadn't actually thought about that.
I know there's been questions about how much they actually get vs what they're offered/promised. Of course they're STUDENT athletes, and student should come first in the equation but that much money and free school? Seems excessive, and frankly unfair to the average student who may need financial help but can't get it due to athletes getting the lion's share.

I think every FBS roster spot is now a full scholarship. Even if that hasn't started yet I doubt donors are going to pay an FCS player that isn't worth a scholarship $300-500K to walk on.nanacat wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2025 8:04 pmQuestion... when these players are promised large amounts of money, NIL or whatever, like the rumored $300k for Scottre, does that also include a tuition scholarship, food, room and board, etc? The athletic department budget is completely separate from the general scholarship fund at every university. Sure, most departments are still funded by the general fund, but if you have a problem with that then we should shut down all D1 programs and just switch everything to club sports (not the worst idea really but a completely separate conversation).

This is all heresy but what I’ve heard from folks… Starting line for NDSU gets 200k/yr each, so in the grand scheme of things, Rohan getting 300-500k isn’t shocking but also depending on him making the roster and depth chart. Connor’s offer is supposedly higher than what he’d make as a first rounder nfl pick outside of top 15 or so, but well into 7 figures at Ohio st. Same as above applies.

NIL money is over and above the scholarship money. They come from different sources.nanacat wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2025 8:04 pmQuestion... when these players are promised large amounts of money, NIL or whatever, like the rumored $300k for Scottre, does that also include a tuition scholarship, food, room and board, etc? I think the amount of money players are getting to transfer and from nil should be public information if you’re playing for a public institution.jaquelethargic wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2025 8:33 pmThis is all heresy but what I’ve heard from folks… Starting line for NDSU gets 200k/yr each, so in the grand scheme of things, Rohan getting 300-500k isn’t shocking but also depending on him making the roster and depth chart. They’re getting the money from a private organization, and technically, it isn’t for playing.TomCat88 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2025 8:46 pmI think the amount of money players are getting to transfer should be public information if you’re playing for a public institution.jaquelethargic wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2025 8:33 pmThis is all heresy but what I’ve heard from folks… Starting line for NDSU gets 200k/yr each, so in the grand scheme of things, Rohan getting 300-500k isn’t shocking but also depending on him making the roster and depth chart. Right, I roughly know that, but in fairness it should be public so everyone knows the expectation. How does anyone know what they need to do to retain players?BelligerentBobcat wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2025 8:53 pmThey’re getting the money from a private organization, and technically, it isn’t for playing.TomCat88 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2025 8:46 pmI think the amount of money players are getting to transfer should be public information if you’re playing for a public institution.jaquelethargic wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2025 8:33 pmThis is all heresy but what I’ve heard from folks… Starting line for NDSU gets 200k/yr each, so in the grand scheme of things, Rohan getting 300-500k isn’t shocking but also depending on him making the roster and depth chart. I would imagine it is. The salary of all state government employees is public information (available online), so if all university employees are considered state government employees then the answer is yes.coloradocat wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2025 8:56 pmIs the wage/salary of every university employee currently public information?TomCat88 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2025 8:46 pmI think the amount of money players are getting to transfer should be public information if you’re playing for a public institution.jaquelethargic wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2025 8:33 pmThis is all heresy but what I’ve heard from folks… Starting line for NDSU gets 200k/yr each, so in the grand scheme of things, Rohan getting 300-500k isn’t shocking but also depending on him making the roster and depth chart. For key personnel, yea. The NIL earnings of Nick Saban or LeBron or Patrick Mahomes or Ronaldo are not publicly disclosed.TomCat88 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2025 9:01 pmRight, I roughly know that, but in fairness it should be public so everyone knows the expectation. This argument has legal merit, because this is exactly the argument the Northwestern football team used at the outset of the NIL legal proceedings.coloradocat wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2025 8:56 pmIs the wage/salary of every university employee currently public information?TomCat88 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2025 8:46 pmI think the amount of money players are getting to transfer should be public information if you’re playing for a public institution.jaquelethargic wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2025 8:33 pmThis is all heresy but what I’ve heard from folks… Starting line for NDSU gets 200k/yr each, so in the grand scheme of things, Rohan getting 300-500k isn’t shocking but also depending on him making the roster and depth chart. If they’re employees of the university, their compensation should be made public information. And I think somewhere that’s probably a legal proceeding that will be pursued.

Except the government institution isn't the one paying them NIL (by design). I'm sure the team/university would have no problem disclosing the value of the scholarships.MTnative wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2025 10:26 pmThis argument has legal merit, because this is exactly the argument the Northwestern football team used at the outset of the NIL legal proceedings.coloradocat wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2025 8:56 pmIs the wage/salary of every university employee currently public information?TomCat88 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2025 8:46 pmI think the amount of money players are getting to transfer should be public information if you’re playing for a public institution.jaquelethargic wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2025 8:33 pmThis is all heresy but what I’ve heard from folks… Starting line for NDSU gets 200k/yr each, so in the grand scheme of things, Rohan getting 300-500k isn’t shocking but also depending on him making the roster and depth chart. Any time public money is involved in anything, then it has to be made public. That's a certainty. I'm not sure if that applies to funds that flow into a public entity, but I'm pretty it does. For instance, if a state office puts funds into a program and then someone else (Private) puts money into that program, then those monies are open to the same public access as the public monies. So, I think (not sure) that if athletes at a public institution like a public university receive money for playing a sport, then it should be public. Perhaps, it has been set up in a way that keeps everything separate. That doesn't seem proper to me.
Anyway, my point is to create fairness. For instance, if I bid on a project and I don't get the bid, I want to know what the other companies bid, so that I know what I'm up against. I need to know where I'm over bidding in order to fix that area and become competitive. This isn't just good for me, but also the entity putting the job out to bid.

There’s no benefit to us fans knowing. Would only lead to problems.
NFL we know what players are getting paid to play. We don’t know their endorsement deals. NIL is just endorsement deals.

Technically true maybe, but in reality, not true. Just look at the "collectives" which pay the players regardless of whether their name or face is being used anywhere.BelligerentBobcat wrote: ↑Fri Jan 10, 2025 8:19 amThey aren’t getting paid to play (technically). Connor’s offer is supposedly higher than what he’d make as a first rounder nfl pick outside of top 15 or so, but well into 7 figures at Ohio st. Same as above applies.
If they’re employees of the university, their compensation should be made public information. And I think somewhere that’s probably a legal proceeding that will be pursued.
Not gonna name specific guys but it's not hard to look at the list of starters and find guys who haven't really done ads or promos but who are certainly getting money.
It's pay for play.
