I am a big fan of Davis, I’m super happy he’s back, and his commitment is refreshing.

Humphrey is better.
No, Davis was the better RB when both were healthy. Davis biggest challenge is to just stay healthy with his style of running.

If utilized correctly by the offensive staff, Jones can be a better all-around RB then both of them.
I think Davis will be back to form next year. When healthy and I playing shape he was beast! Playing running back is a position you need reps to get to form. Davis never really got the reps to get his body ready to play the position. He probably came back to soon!

Davis vs:
SDSU 12-66
Weber 14-132
Sac 12-110
Idaho 11-84
UM 14-107
Ndsu dnp

Against five of the top six opponents he was very consistent and had 63 carries for 499 yards. 7.9 ypc.
In his only extensive action this year, again on the road vs #5 seed in FCS playoffs, he was 13-91. Jones/Humphrey 18-64 in that game.

I honestly had no idea what a big time player in big time games Davis is until I dug this up. He didn’t play in either of the NDSU games and, well you know how that went.

I wonder why he didn't play. Was fully expecting to see him some. Might have be the spark we needed. Sigh.

They’re tough to compare. In 2023, MSU was still in 2QB system with Davis.

Humphrey’s most impressive game, in terms of strength of opponent, was Idaho1. He wasn’t doing well vs ucd and got hurt (Davis came in was very effective, especially on TD drive to start second half). Davis was playing well vs UM but got hurt. Humphrey gave it a try but only had one carry.

Humphrey sat out the Martin and Idaho games going five weeks with just one carry (4 weeks no carries) before returning for USD and didn’t play well vs them or ndsu. It’s unclear if that was due to his injury from the usd game 5-7 weeks previously. He looked healthy prior to the ndsu game and by all accounts I got he was. Hard to say for sure.
Or, knowing what we know now, was Humphrey saving himself.
Careful. I already got criticized for alluding to the possibility of players doing exactly that!
Haha ya, but I don't think you were wrong. I mean it was likely a combination of things, but still. Doesn't matter now.
Water underneath the bridge for sure. I do think we can learn from it though. I think there’s things the coaching staff and former players can do to make sure that one more piece of the puzzle is in place as you come to the end of the season.
Montana State lost by three points. It’s the small things that need to be in place to win a championship.

To be fair in Vigen’s post game interview he mentioned they made adjustments at half and he said Davis was the beneficiary of that.

Interesting. The one outside the locker room? What time in the video does he say that? I recall Davis running straight up the gut on three straight plays on that drive with the last being a TD. The first two plays of the drive were Adam Jones for 2 and 3 yards. Doesn’t really add up. Second half: Davis 91 on 13 carries; Jones 12 on 6 carries.

I don’t know. I only know a handful of their players. It wasn’t Cam Miller or Marty or Mosteart or Kopp or Lance.

Geez I think I confused UCD with Gris. It was referring to the slow run game then Julius came in and had some big runs. I agree Julius is going to be a great back but I gotta give the nudge to Scotty as he just seems quicker.

Yes, their all American safety who was injured most of the year, decided right before the playoffs or during, to transfer.

Looking around at other opponents this year and I see where Bison didn't have one departure in the portal! They gained some more great talent transferring in. They will be a handful next year with all key players returning except QB. Their depth was deep in areas of people leaving per graduation.

They somehow have much more cash to pay players than MSU, which is a big part of it. They've been paying FCOA for at least 6 years, probably longer but I remember Choate bringing that up after one of the playoff losses in his term.

Well, according to the article I post here just recently Cats spend more money on their football program than Bison do. Total spending of entire football program.

Winning does help to sustain players for top teams. One of the biggest reasons why players stay also.
