Even if Powdrell stayed, we’d still need to go fishing for a couple DBs.mslacatfan wrote: ↑Fri Jan 10, 2025 4:41 pmTravelingcat wrote: ↑Fri Jan 10, 2025 4:35 pmNot surprised Powdrell went to the portal. He has elite speed and was good to play for us as a True Freshman. He's from TX no no loyalty to the region.
I'd expect him to get some pretty big offers. I actually think it's our biggest loss though because we were thin at DB. Think we will be fine at RB now that Davis is staying. We're going to need to go to the portal for some DB help.
Yup…. Unfortunately I think this one is our biggest loss.
Scottre- complete stud, but Davis and jones are just as good or better.
Moore- nfl talent…. But we somehow have a machine on campus that just clones all American OL guys. Will be fine here.
Rohan- annoying he is leaving, but I love the depth we have in the TE room.
Powdrell…. Fairly thin here. Really need Jon Johnson to come back.

Unpopular opinion time: I don’t think Powdrell is as big of a loss as some of the other positions.
Are we thin at corner? Absolutely.
Is Powdrell freaky athletic? Also yes.
But how many times was he out of position on big plays? How many PI penalties did he get called on when the ball was actually thrown his way?
Vigen even mentioned in a Monday conference how Powdrell has to remember to only do his 1/11th.
Frequently he’d be playing hero ball and trying to do too much or always trying to make the big plays and getting burned.
Will it be a loss? Absolutely.
Are we better off with someone else getting reps or bringing in a transfer? Who knows, but I think so.

I think Powdrell was really coming into his own this season and would have been awesome for the Cats moving forward.
Part of the reason we saw growing pains with him is that he played way earlier than a lot of guys and took his lumps.

The fact that McMIllan was so highly recruited and then became one of basically two Freshmen to see meaningful snaps on a super-deep team is an incredibly positive sign. I think they'll be a learning curve, but have little doubt he'll be solid. Nonetheless, it would be huge if Jon Johnson would return and we're still going to need to bring in at least one transfer-- maybe more.
At safety/Nickel, the fact that we have so much depth built from last year is going to be super-helpful. Polidore is a stud, particularly in run support, and we'll have Dowler back, and he was a co-starter before his injury. Add to that experienced options like Gray, Taki U. and Pottinger, and we'll be fine in the back.
And of course, we have five other DBS who redshirted as Freshmen last year and some of them are probably ready to contribute.

Trust the recruiting skill of the coaching staff. Simeon Woodard started as a freshman and so did Powdrell, so why shouldn't we expect that a few of this year's true freshmen will be ready to take on important roles on the 2025 team in their second years? Everyone keeps asking for transfers without ever really having seen the current group play, but my question is would those transfer guys actually be better than the players already on the roster? Still, it seems like at least one DB transfer would help if for nothing else than to help build depth in case of injuries.Travelingcat wrote: ↑Sat Jan 11, 2025 8:57 amThe fact that McMIllan was so highly recruited and then became one of basically two Freshmen to see meaningful snaps on a super-deep team is an incredibly positive sign. So today is the last day. Would love to see more "Staying" posts today rather than more transfers. Of course there's another portal opening in the spring but I for one am ready for a break from more jumping ship. Also would love to see if the Cats are going to bring in any new guys after the exits. Do we know if any offers have even been made yet? I'm not on X so have no idea.

Obviously, we'd love it if our guys we're developing are ready-- but right now we are really short on proven talent at CB that has shown he can get it done at this level. And it just makes sense to have some proven commodities. The dream would be a Power 4 CB3 or CB4 who wants to be "the guy" but even a Group of 5 rotational DB or a high-level starter at another FCS program would be a welcome addition.MSU01 wrote: ↑Sat Jan 11, 2025 9:31 amTrust the recruiting skill of the coaching staff. A couple of our true Freshman who sat this year (Brendon Ross and Kory Boyd) have elite speed (10.5 100) so certainly they have the physical tools to play.

Regarding Julius, having already been at an FBS program it does make sense that he remain a Bobcat. What would be the advantage to portalling out? He'll be RB 1 or 2 at least if he's healthy. It was a smart business decision. Let alone he loves the fan base and program. Honestly, he could be a big help with recruiting.

Man, I really hope he can avoid injuries next year…. I think yer looking at an all American RB if he can stay healthy.nanacat wrote: ↑Sat Jan 11, 2025 10:59 amRegarding Julius, having already been at an FBS program it does make sense that he remain a Bobcat. A healthy Julius Davis/Adam Jones is about as imposing of a 1-2 punch as you will see at our level.

One thing to keep in mind is that by my count, MSU has lost 26 players from the 2024 team to either graduation or the portal so far...but also signed an incoming recruiting class of 26 high school players in December. So if anyone is expecting a high number of transfers right now I think that's unrealistic given the number of roster spots available. I wouldn't expect more than a couple incoming transfers this winter, then of course there will be additional movement in the Spring portal window and over the summer. Ultimately the core of next year's team is already in place, we just haven't seen a lot of them play as part of the first team units yet. And they've got a full off-season to continue their development before we do!nanacat wrote: ↑Sat Jan 11, 2025 9:59 amSo today is the last day. There is a thread dedicated to recruiting near the top of the football forum. Just go to the first page of that thread to see all the known offers and commits. That's known offers, so there may be others out there that we don't know about.nanacat wrote: ↑Sat Jan 11, 2025 9:59 amSo today is the last day. That and Spring semester is only days away. If a portal transfer doesn't commit in the next couple of days, they wouldn't even be on the roster until Summer.MSU01 wrote: ↑Sat Jan 11, 2025 12:05 pmOne thing to keep in mind is that by my count, MSU has lost 26 players from the 2024 team to either graduation or the portal so far...but also signed an incoming recruiting class of 26 high school players in December. Set it for tomorrow morning, at that point there shouldn't be much additional movement either outgoing or incoming until the Spring portal window opens.
