Money is nearly all of this and to pretend otherwise is absurd.
If it were really all about money then I could give you a long list of players who wouldn't have stayed at MSU for their entire careers.
What I'm saying is that players leaving for bigger programs is almost entirely about money. Obviously for those who choose to stay it's about more than that.
I think we forget that for the majority of the players, certainly all of the OOS players, they didn't grow up hoping and dreaming they'd get to play for MSU. The opportunity to play for an ACC, SEC, whatever big conference school is lifelong bragging rights, it's the opportunity to play at the highest level they can and prove they can do so, and get paid while doing so. That's hard to pass up for a competitor. And honestly, for those that are getting 6 figures (which I don't think is as common as is reported) it's almost fiscally irresponsible to turn that down. That's legitimately life changing money at that age.

If we're going to call them mercenaries, are they not mercenaries for coming here? They chose MSU because it was their best option, not necessarily because it was their favorite place. And they all know, and we all know, that if they don't perform, if they don't play as well as expected, they get cut. No more scholarship, no more school, you gotta leave. Players get pushed out or told to leave all of the time. I think the school, and thus fans, would have more of a moral high ground to stand on if the school were offering a 4-5 year scholarship, but they aren't. It's a 1 year at a time deal, and if they don't perform, they're gone. It's not a surprise players are willing to leave. It's a business on both sides.
To a certain extent yes. It started with FBS and is moving down and impacting lower levels more each year. Did kids lose their spots, absolutely. Not really much different than student who comes on scholarships and has some expectations to perform or not keep it. Some scholarships even have to be earned each year competing against other students.

It will be interesting how it shakes out. Will we see more NAIA and D2 moving. Will roster limits slow it down. There have always been transfers. The volume has exploded. Partially due to covid year players, partially these strange 6,7,8 year eligibility, the JC ruling. It seems the only rule now is there are no rules. Intent of NIL and colleges sharing revenue seems a distant past.

Pro teams typically still have 80% or so same roster year to year. College teams are starting to be 50% or less. Fans may need to adjust to truly just following a team and not players. They can support the ones there, but may not get the connections like they have in the past.

And those kids move on. Theres no 'transfer portal' for academics, a kid just transfers.

Your last point is pretty key: the vast majority of pro players (and coaches) are NOT free agents. They are under contract & become free agents when the contract ends or they are cut. And if they are cut (or fired) they typically get severance payouts.

College players aren't under contract. So OF COURSE they will jump at a better offer.

Personally I find it a little frustrating that the NCAA is throwing the door wide open to "unlimited free agency all the time" instead of enforcing rules like the NFL or NBA to ensure a competitive landscape. Simple things like allowing 5 year scholarships with buyout clauses, fixing the inconsistent eligibility rules that allow the JC ruling, reinstate the 1 year sit out to transfer up, etc.

Its a pretty significant dereliction of duty-and a shocking swing of the pendulum from the days where athletes weren't even allowed to get summer jobs.

Some of the latest madness is NIL and Collective issue vs NCAA. The have the ability to set contract terms for payments. In the rush for the FBS schools to get the best guys they just moved what many were doing illegally under these with little limit. Show up to campus get your Lamborghini. That put pressure everywhere else. Appearances, promotion, performance all should be considered. 1st team you get this $, 2nd team this $, hit your yardage target earn more. This is where I hope it gets. A booster paying for a kid who ends up having little impact on team can only happen for so long before it affects what they will give.

On one hand, I'm pissed that a Petrino poached Rohan Jones. On the other hand, I'm secretly hoping Rohan drops a couple of passes at critical moments just so I can see Bobby's reaction

Hopefully, Bobby will get whiplash from seeing the drop and have to break out his neck brace again.

Everybody needs to chill out. And you definitely shouldn't be calling players out that are still on the team. Here's my perspective, which some of you need a little more of, on all the transfer outs so far.

Portal out:
Conner Moore: Everybody knew this was going to happen for awhile. No surprise. We will be fine. Cedric played pretty well when he had too.
Jared White: Buried on the depth chart. We will be fine
Blake Stillwell: Passed up on depth chart. We will be fine.
Cole Bullock: Buried on depth chart. We will be fine
Marqui Johnson: Buried on depth chart. We will be fine
Elijah Elliott: Buried on depth chart. We will be fine
Scottre Humphrey: I like what we have returning in the that room, also, there's a reason this position isn't valued in NFL. We will be fine.
Rohan Jones: As long as his replacement wants to block on the perimeter. Should be fine.
Garrett Walchli: Buried on depth chart. We will be fine
Lonyatta Alexander Jr.: Ryan King had passed him up on the depth chart. We will be fine
Andrew Powdrell: Physical, good in run support as cb. His coverage skills can be replaced. Secondary is a big question mark
Jon Johnson: If it wasn't for the recent JuCo thing we weren't going to have him anyway. Secondary is a big question mark
Casey Kautzman : Passed up on depth chart. We will be fine
Dru Polidore: Biggest loss in my mind. However, we were 6-0 w/o him and Taki started to show something. Secondary is big question mark

So the biggest portal hit in my mind is the secondary. It will be interesting to see if we bring in some competition there. If the coaches don't bring in anybody, that's probably a good sign.

If not this year?.........When?
