He (allegedly) shoved a female coach and a trainer. He’s fired, just hasn’t been announced yet as they deal with the legalities

I plan to show more class with this news that many of the gris fans did with the Bobcat football assistant coaches problems.

I mean, they do have the high ground here considering they fired their coach and MSU didn’t…

My point is; problem coaches aren’t unique to one program.

I’m not sure MSU has had a coach assault female staff members.

Both universities have had coaches get DUIs. Some of the DUIs get buried, some don’t.

Blaine Taylor got one when he as a successful coach for Gris basketball and kept his job.

Sounds like Holsinger has some serious issues. I hope he gets the needed help.

The turmoil with their coach certainly didn't seem to impact the UM women's team tonight as they blew out ISU by 21. The UM men on the other hand got blown out by 25.

The interim coach for UM is Nate Harris, who was on Coach Bnford's staff for a few years around a decade ago before leaving for a job in Texas. He's very good, so this may be a case of addition by subtraction for them. That said, home against ISU and Weber this year is one of the easier weekends any team will have so we'll have to see how they do against harder competition.

And the gris men led by 8 starting the second half. Total meltdown.

Gris basketball player got a DUI last year that magically disappeared.

And do you really think Belligerent has any idea what “taking the High road” means?

There were going to be lawsuits had they not settled. It would've been ugly.

No.

As someone who has employees the 2 situations are completely different. If my employee gets arrested for stealing on their day off, their own time, I don't have a legal right to fire them. Maybe I can take away handling money part of the job, but not fire them. If they steal from my register I can fire them on the spot. I have (well it was the next day once we had the security footage sorted).

What the MSU coaches did was on their own time and not directly against MSU (except for the whole TH driving a MSU vehicle which I think should have given cause?). If Holsinger physically assaulted or pushed or whatever another UM employee, especially his subordinate he could have been fired then and there with cause. There has to be some nuance to the story because the way he was on leave and then they paid him for the rest of the season is weird. I think it was sweeping it under the rug a little but he didn't have a legal basis for wrongful termination if the story is true. If they fired him, they would have to give cause and that's a black eye(no pun intended) for the program.

The part of your post in bold is the exact problem with firing the coach for cause. If the fired coach disputes the details of what happened, then it absolutely will result in lawsuits being filed and a lengthy and messy legal process to go through. MSU went through this with both Mike Kramer and Robin Potera (former WBB coach). They were smart to do what they did, come to a buyout agreement that prevents him from pursuing any additional legal action against the university.

Hence me saying there has to be nuance. Like its my word versus yours but I'm a$$hole and everyone knows I did it.

In this case, his contract was ending and paying out the rest of it was much less expensive for UM (and us taxpayers) than a long legal circus that would end in a settlement anyhow.

The article linked above actually states that Holsinger had recently signed a 4-year contract extension. I assume that played at least some role in negotiating the buyout agreement. I can see why both sides would just want to move on without turning this into a public legal battle, especially for Holsinger himself who I'm sure would rather this be kept as quiet as possible for the sake of his future job prospects if he still wants to coach.

That’s absolutely crazy considering how that program is in even worse shape than when they didn’t renew Schweyen’s contract. Contract terminated for cause with a $115,000 buyout is a somewhat acceptable result, but it is odd since they could have fired him for cause and paid nothing.

Great job regardless, Haslam.
