The D2 players finished, for the most part, their season earlier. So for the most part that who is available. Over the next few days you will see a flood of D1 transfers.

Re: Portal Begins (MBB)
To clarify. There are some dang good D2 players. I just done think you can build a whole roster with them. That is level Logie recruited in past and seems to key on. Several have interest from other mid major schools. But if you show interest in that many and some accept don't you have to move on them and then not be able to wait till others enter.

Re: Portal Begins (MBB)
Drake just took out Missouri with a bunch of D-2 transfers that followed the coach there. There's definitely some D-1 talent at that level that didn't receive as much recruiting attention lot of high school for whatever reason. But yes, probably not a good idea to recruit exclusively from that pool of players.tetoncat wrote: ↑Sun Mar 23, 2025 2:47 pmTo clarify. There are some dang good D2 players. Around the Big Sky there are a couple big names already in the portal with Julius Mims of Idaho and Langston Reynolds of UNC. On the women's side Taylor Smith of Weber State is the biggest name in the portal so far that I've seen. Reynolds and Smith were both first-team all conference this past season. Should be a very interesting week to see who else jumps in and if there are any early commitments of incoming transfers.

Re: Portal Begins (MBB)
I wonder if players from other schools, who were key players on that team, will see what Esme accomplished at MSU and seek a transfer here? There could be an opportunity to lead a team to a championship if their school is unlikely to see that kind of success. Not that I want selfish players looking to elevate themselves, because that is certainly a danger, but rather someone who sees what can be playing with a team who loves each other and lifts each other up, what Esme got to experience and spoke about. Probably need to really weed through attitudes and goals to get the right player.MSU01 wrote: ↑Mon Mar 24, 2025 8:35 amAround the Big Sky there are a couple big names already in the portal with Julius Mims of Idaho and Langston Reynolds of UNC. Re: Portal Begins (MBB)
MSU has to be a pretty desirable landing spot for players given what Coach Binford and her staff have built here. The main issue right now is that until any current players leave, there aren't any available spots on the roster as MSU has signed four freshmen to replace the four graduating seniors. Assuming there isn't a mass exodus of multiple key players, Binford has the luxury of being highly selective about who she chooses to go after from the portal. Unlike the men's team which has at least six roster spots to fill through transfer portal players or additional high school recruits.nanacat wrote: ↑Mon Mar 24, 2025 10:49 amI wonder if players from other schools, who were key players on that team, will see what Esme accomplished at MSU and seek a transfer here? There's a good website to keep track of all of the Big Sky portal entries. Malik Moore of UM and Mason Williams of EWU are the latest two to enter. Nobody else from MSU yet aside from Kolly and Walker.

Somebody has a need for a bunch of missed free throws? I don't understand. He's the presumptive starter at point guard...unless he knows we're recruiting over him (possible I suppose).

The list of returning scholarship players shrinks (for now) to four...Jed Miller, Pat McMahon, Trap Johnson, and Jeremiah Davis.

Re: Portal Begins (MBB)
There was a lot of good talk about Trap Johnson. He must have red-shirted? I’d forgotten he was already here until I was just looking at the roster. What’s his upside? Sounds like a Logie-type player.

Yep, he redshirted this year. Definitely seemed like a good recruit on paper but I haven't heard anything about how he has looked this year in practices.Bobcat4Ever wrote: ↑Mon Mar 24, 2025 3:02 pmThere was a lot of good talk about Trap Johnson. I am surprised that Bryce Zephir entered the portal. If he had stayed, I assume he would have started. But I guess the grass is always greener....

Bryce also benefitted from the JUCO ruling. So he will still be a Junior next year as well.duelalumnicat wrote: ↑Mon Mar 24, 2025 3:29 pmI am surprised that Bryce Zephir entered the portal. If he had stayed, I assume he would have started. But I guess the grass is always greener....

Maybe Bryce calculated that being on a Logie team, where in one game you can go from leading scorer to being "a bad fit" and never seeing the court again, is a little too risky.

Good for him. Time for me to move on from last season.
I think Walker will move up the ranks a little (to a higher ranked conference) given his ability to score in the paint plus he can hit the occasional three. We'll see...

Re: Portal Begins (MBB)
No disrespect to Bryce at all.. He was welcomed and he was a good addition, even somewhat desperately needed at his position. But, he doesnt seem to be an elite or upper echelon type player. I feel this doesnt bode well for our school or conference. Only way to keep average type players is to have a nice NIL deal for them? We are out then right? What am I missing?
