Outside of those 5 DE’s listed above, who would be listed as up and coming youngsters?
At DE? Frederickson, Downing and Thornhill. Vigen is a junior so he isn’t a youngster, but he got into a few games last year.
Seth Brock was one of my primary standouts from teh spring game. He's thin at 204 pounds but holy cow is he fast and twitchy.
He’s up to 230.

I was going to say....he coached my son in the Spring flag football league. Seems like a great kid, and seemed much larger than 204, standing next to him in person!

I certainly agree with this. The 204 pounds is last year's weight, so I am curious what Seth may weigh now. But I can really see him as next great DE in his junior and senior seasons.

Edit: Just saw these with him at 230. I think we may see quite a bit of Brock. I went to practice yesterday and he was on the kickoff coverage team and was one of the fastest kids to the ball carrier.

Thanks Tom. I do remember now after watching the spring game, Seth Brock being someone to pay attention to.

I’m pretty sure the majority of the weights are updated on the roster. Still a few I don’t think are done, but most are.

Zimmer listed at 6’6 285. Huge growth.

Looks like they are adding the names of the players to the back of the jerseys this year. Can anyone confirm?

Really impressed with the growth. Top 5 LBs are all around or over 230. DTs are all between 280-300. Top 5 DEs all over 240. TEs are all in that 230-250 range. OL looks incredible and our true freshman size is 260 at its lightest. Some names who did work this off-season from a growth standpoint:

- JJ Dolan hitting 190
- Chance Wilson over 200
- Cole Taylor and Bryce Grebe both over 230
- Paul Brott hitting 300
- Zac Crews hitting 240 and Kenny Widen hitting 250
- Braden Zimmer hitting 285

Those were the notables for me. Overall just very impressed with our size.

Crews is very imposing up close. He stood out on Media Day. Reminds me of Ted Hendricks, who played for the Colts, Raiders and Packers.

I think Crews is the most fluid of them all. He is very agile.

Came up with a rudimentary system for ranking defenses depending on where they ranked in the final season statistics. Team is given points based on where they ranked in 1) points allowed per game, 2) average yards per play, 3) average yards rushing per play and 4) pass defense efficiency. Best possible score is four for a team that's No. 1 in each category. The lower the score, the better.

MSU
2021 - 10 (1st in pts allowed; 4th in pass def. eff.; 2nd in rush per play; 3rd yards per play.)
2022 - 25 (6th, 7th, 6th, 6th)
2023 - 13 (2nd, 3rd, 5th, 3rd)
2024 - 8 (1st, 2nd, 4th, 1st)

This doesn't factor in S.O.S. and just how much backups played in blowouts. A lot of times they're just 0.1 behind or ahead of someone, which kind of cancels out. The 2023 team probably scores better if it doesn't have such a tough SOS.

This does fairly accurately show MSU's progress over the last two years under Vigen and Co. It basically fits with what I saw. I thought the 2023 defense was very sharp early (SDSU, WSU) in the year but tailed off late (SAC, UM). The Idaho game seemed to sap them. The '22 team's drop off and then the bounce back in 2023 and 2024 standout.

I think MSU was better against the run in 2023 and 2024 than 5th and 4th. I would rank it #1 2024, #2 2021 #3) 2023, #4 2022. I think the top three are all fairly even.

Great news, to me football is the sport where they need names on jerseys the most since there are so many duplicated jersey numbers worn by two players. There's a certain poster here who has been asking for this for years who will be very happy!

That poster is definitely not me. I understand this was inevitable to give players another perk in the portal wars but I like the cleaner look without names on the back. It definitely makes it easier to tell who's who but I like being forced to learn who everyone is.
