Because they're now down 2 scores if you don't get it, with 2 minutes to go. They would have been down 9 instead of 8. The math is the math.

Re: Bobcats vs Yale - Not the Official Game Day Thread
Why did it backfire. If they score at end and go for 2 and get it, tie ball games just like if kick 3 xp. If the kick first 2 xp and then go for it and miss still lose. They needed 1 to not tie. Would everyone say Illinois State decision was wrong if they had not converted. Maybe they had something schemed up all week and thought it would ork.wbtfg wrote: ↑Tue Dec 09, 2025 1:19 pmI'm with you, that was a bizarre call. I think it was an unorthodox attempt to garner some additional momentum. Backfired on him. Vigen didn't understand the logic either.....WalkOn79 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 09, 2025 1:09 pmAgree to disagree I guess.GoodTimesAllTheTime wrote: ↑Mon Dec 08, 2025 5:39 pmNo, I’m sorry but that’s totally wrong. You need a 2 point conversion and at least one extra point. If you wait until the end of the game to go for it, you either don’t get it and lose or you tie. If you go for it with ~2 minutes to go and get it, then you can win by converting another 2 point conversion or choose to tie kicking XP. It also preserves your (very slim) chances to make up for the missed 2pt conversion and try to score twice. It should be about maximizing your chances of winning. You can’t be afraid of losing by 9 vs losing by 8.WalkOn79 wrote: ↑Mon Dec 08, 2025 9:32 amDude, if you don't convert then you have NO chance with 2 minutes left down 2 scores. You have to cut it to one score there to have any hope of extending the game.GoodTimesAllTheTime wrote: ↑Sun Dec 07, 2025 7:19 pmIt’s better to go for it because you need to make a two point conversion at some point. You might as well try and get it down 9 to cut the lead to seven, which gives you the chance to win the game, rather than ensure the best you can do is tie. You should be trying to win the game, not to ensure that it is a closer game. That’s for people who believe in moral victories.WalkOn79 wrote: ↑Sun Dec 07, 2025 4:53 pmHUH? You go for 2 at the end and miss it, you’re down 2 scores with 2 minutes to go?GoodTimesAllTheTime wrote: ↑Sat Dec 06, 2025 9:12 pmIt is objectively the right decision to go for 2 down 8 in the fourth quarter. It gives you a higher chance to win the game. The big mistake Yale’s coach made was not going for 2 again at the end of the game.PortlandCat90 wrote: ↑Sat Dec 06, 2025 7:22 pmThat looks to be the DC, not the Head Coach? The "real school" is definitely a shot at MSU. Doesn't the HC face the masses after a loss? Compare this to Vigen, who is nothing but gracious.
I no I am many more stupier than anybody with the Y their jacket and hat, but if Coach Reno has a minute to explain, I'd love to hear the Statistics textbook rationale for going for 2 via a reverse pass by the WR when down 8 with 14 minutes left. But then, I didn't go to 2 real schools to get my CPA and MBA so I may need an interpreter.

But they didn't go for it the 2nd time. That kept them within 1 score and they would have had to convert if they scored again. I'm not following your logic

Someone was suggesting that they should've went for 2 when they cut it to 21-12. We're apparently arguing about 2 different things.

I think so. The first discussions were criticisms of Yale going for 2 after 1st TDWalkOn79 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 09, 2025 2:29 pmSomeone was suggesting that they should've went for 2 when they cut it to 21-12. We're apparently arguing about 2 different things.

They need a two point conversion either way. Why is it better to wait until the end of the game to go for it? If you go for it the first time, you preserve you chance to win the game, have to opportunity to tie, or have more time to try and get a field goal and a touchdown. If you wait, you can tie at best, or have no time left to score again. There is no benefit to losing by 8 instead of 9 unless you want to be able to say it was a one-score game afterward to make yourself feel better.

I'm not quibbling with going to two after the first score. Someone said they should go for 2 again after the 2nd score with 2 minutes to go. You have virtually no chance to even tie it then if you don't convert.GoodTimesAllTheTime wrote: ↑Tue Dec 09, 2025 4:21 pmThey need a two point conversion either way. Wow. We're still arguing about a 2 point conversion in a game four days ago? Impressive! LOL

If we can get oldgris in on it can go another couple days and 10 pages.
Can't make up my mind as to which is better - 55-21 or 48-14, but 34-11 will do, but 48-23 may be the best of all.

Are you illiterate? That’s exactly what I’m saying. Yale was down 9 points after scoring the touchdown with 2:09 left in the game. To tie the game, they need at least an extra point, another touchdown, and a two point conversion. Either way Yale needs a two point conversion. The only way to preserve the opportunity to win the game is by going for two right away. Additionally, if you go for it and don’t get it, leaving you down 9, Yale is better off than they would be if they waited until the end of the game for a tie-or-die 2 point conversion. Even if you don’t get it, it’s better to know how many points you need when you still have time. To summarize, going for two early gives you the opportunity to win the game, leaves you no worse off because you need a two point conversion either way, and preserves your (very slim) opportunity to get two scores if you don’t convert at the 2:09 mark.WalkOn79 wrote: ↑Wed Dec 10, 2025 4:54 pmI'm not quibbling with going to two after the first score.
