Scenarios

Post by catatac » Tue Nov 09, 2004 4:28 pm

Obviously it's a 2-game season and if we win them both, we are the lone Big Sky champions and will begin the playoffs at home. The other scenarios don't look as good. Most are saying that if we lose one more, all playoff chances are gone. If we lose to Eastern, the Griz beat Sac. State, then we beat the Griz, they'd be 8 & 3, we'd be 7 & 4, with one of our losses coming from a 1-A team. Shouldn't that put us higher than the Griz for a playoff spot? Or would they get in due to the # of the fans they'd bring? Also, if that scenario plays out but the Griz lose to Sac. State as well, would we get in then?

Basically, Cats must win both games to get into the playoffs.

I see the BSC getting 2 teams into the playoffs.
1. UM and EWU - if EWU beats MSU, they are then conference champs tie-breaker at least.
2. UM and MSU - if MSU beats EWU and UM.

Unless UM losses to Sac and MSU, then only the Cats are getting into the playoffs.

No, at this point if we lose one more, we are done. The rules say specifically, "more than four losses will put a team in jeopardy of not making the playoffs." We lose one more and we are at four losses. Unless some really wild things happen the next two weeks there will be enough teams with 3 or fewer losses to take up all the at large bids that the committee will not be taking a four loss team, no matter if it was one of them to a I-A. As to if we were 7-4 and the Griz 8-3 and we beat them, not sure why you feel we should be ahead of them as the Griz definately have more quality wins than we do. Remember, while one of our losses was to a I-A, one of our victories was to a Div. II. The playoff guidelines also stipulate that preference will be given to teams that play an all Div. I schedule.

Bottom line, WE ARE IN THE PLAYOFFS THIS WEEKEND. Lose one and we are done, simple as that.

Actually there is a fourth scenario out there where I see it as only one BSC team making. Unfortunately it is the Griz.

4. UM - UM wins out, MSU beats EWU

This would put both MSU and EWU with two conference losses and four losses overall. As I said in my previous post, there aren't going to be any four loss teams in, so only Montana makes it with the autobid.

catatac,

You really DO need to stop drinkin' to even discuss what would happen if the griz lost to Sac.

THERE IS NO WAY IN HELL THAT UM IS GOING TO LOSE TO SAC IN MISSOULA.

That being said, our ONLY way in, as many have accurately stated, is to win each of the next two. THAT being said, the "playoff mentality" is dead-on. Keep winning, keep playing (yes, I know we play one more little game if we lose to EWU, but it won't have any post-season ramifications).

Lose to EWU and we simply try to play for pride & prevent the griz from being co-champs.

Grizzlies: 2-5 when it matters most

I hope this doesn't happen. At least two big sky schools should make it.

I agree, I would hate to see the Sky relegated to only an autobid representative. We(the Big Sky Conference) have made some good strides toward showing in the last couple of years that we are not just a one team league. This scenario, if it comes to pass, will set the Big Sky back in that regard and could hurt the chances for at large teams that are on the bubble next year(see Idaho State in 2002).

I think Eastern is in with a win this week. I can see in the future that the new conference will probably take away some of the Big Sky playoff entries. I doubt if Cal Poly is out yet. A win and a close loss the next 2 weeks might give the Cats an outside shot. One probably should throw out Adams State and Colorado State in the analysis of the Cats.

Nevermind - on second thought, that was dumb. I guess I was just in a conference mindset thinking that if we took 2nd place in our conference and Griz were in 3rd, we should get in ahead of them.

As others have said, here's to beginning playoffs Saturday!

Stranger things have happened. I didn't think there was any way in hell we'd demolish NAU 60 to 14 at their house. Didn't think there was any way in Hell DII NDSU would have beaten the Griz in Missoula last year. The list goes on. Granted, our D sucked on Saturday but you gotta admit, that Leadingham\Amey\Mole combo was impressive. You know they'll be putting up around 500 yards on the Griz D.

From what is being said on the IAA board, no team with 4 loses will get in.
I am hoping that two from the Sky get in.

Winning the sky doesn’t guarantee hosting a playoff game. A lot has to do with the regional format, what teams are in and what their record is.

Lets say Sam Houston St, msu, Montana and Cal Poly are the 4 teams from the west. It is conceivable that Montana maybe ranked higher than the cats, even if you beat us.

Montana and msu will not play each other in the first round. msu could go to Sam Houston, with Montana and Cal Poly playing each other.

Well, not if it's because the cats beat us. :D
